All About Maldives Vacation Packages – How to Find the Right Package for You

Saturday, September 4th, 2010

There are many Maldives vacation packages to choose from so that you can easily find something that suits your needs. The Maldives is a group of small islands located in the Indian Ocean. These islands are known for their coral beauty, so if you want a vacation in paradise, this is the perfect destination.

Some of the most popular packages include honeymoon getaways, sports vacations, scuba-diving tours, and sightseeing tours. Whether you are hoping for a romantic getaway with your significant other or simply want to relax in the sun for a few days, you can find a package tailored to your needs.

The most popular time to visit the Maldives is between December and April. This is the peak season, which means the resorts and hotels will be fully booked. If you wish to go during these months, you need to book as far in advance as possible.

On the other hand, you might find cheaper packages if you visit during off-season. Off-season is between May and November. During this time, the water is warm, although the skies are cloudy and rain is more likely. If you do not mind rain and humidity, then you can save money by going during the summer and fall months.

There are plenty of fun activities, some of which are included in a Maldives vacation package: scuba diving, surfing, Para sailing, rafting, jet skiing, golf, tennis, etc. The resorts themselves offer such activities, so you will be surrounded by endless fun no matter where you stay!

The prices vary, depending on the number of days you want to stay, the type of accommodation you prefer, the airline, and the time of the year you want to visit. In addition, some Maldives vacation packages are all-inclusive, meaning they include everything from the airfare to the food.

To save money, you can go with a basic package. A basic package generally includes airfare and accommodation. You will be responsible for everything else, including food, souvenirs, tickets to events, and activities. If you want a simple vacation that does not involve shopping or playing sports, then this might not be a big deal for you. However, if you do want to experience everything the Maldives have to offer, your best bet is to go for an all-inclusive package. The bigger the package, the more you will save.

Speaking of discounts, some resorts will charge you less per night if you agree to stay for a select number of nights. For instance, some hotels will give you an extra night free if you agree to stay for at least five nights. Some will also throw in extra freebies if you choose an all-inclusive package. Be sure to look over all of your options and choose the one that will offer you the most at a price you can afford!

God and Your Relationship Space – 3 Doesn’t Have to Be a Crowd

Saturday, September 4th, 2010

Those first glorious moments of spiritual or religious awakening can be huge. As we begin to open and seek our true “selves” we start to ask questions such as “who am I?” or “why am I here?”. The first experience that connects you to your inner self is one of the most, or maybe best of your life and it’s only natural you want to share it. You find yourself reviewing jobs, friends, values, beliefs and your relationship tends to come under the spotlight very quickly because often your dear heart is the first to be affected by the chrysalis of the “new me” starting to form.

The changes however can often cause us to fall out of sync with our partner resulting in conflict and a new attitude of “but my way is a better way for both of us darling”. The one who is awakening can become spiritually egoistic and develop a bad case of spiritual righteousness and will try to drag their partner to all sorts of events and meditation groups in an effort to “help” them find God among the incense and “Om”ing and tell them what to eat to raise “their vibration” to a higher level. It is no wonder then that many partners want to *** off eventually!

As an educator, I see many couples with the “dragger and draggee” disease often manifesting as a tiring tug o’ war game. Generally, but not exclusively, the awakened ones happen to be the women who get terribly distressed because after a weekend retreat or workshop, for example, hubby is not ready to brim over with the same excitement and enthusiasm that their inner journey has cleared out another morsel of their emotional closet. “My needs are not being met”, “I don’t feel heard”, “He just doesn’t get it” are some of the clichd words I often hear and at some level they believe their partner is frequently resisting the urge to phone the nearest rehab clinic which makes them feel like a freak. Not easy.

I have a dear friend who was persuaded by her husband to go to the doctor because he believed there was something radically wrong with her and she obviously needed pills! It may sound funny but it can become a matter of psycho analysis that can drive both parties nuts as a gradual erosion of what was a generally happy and content relationship, takes place as the newly God filled person races ahead.

At this point I would offer that, in terms of my own personal experience in spiritual awakening, that “it” or God, if you will, chose me not the other way around. I believe we don’t’ have a choice in awakening. You can choose kicking or screaming as the route or the let go and surrender one. Often we bounce between the two dragging our partner by the hair. Ouch!

7 years ago my dear dad passed and with that deep experience came a very natural and effortless meeting of people, courses, books that would create my future. I have loved and agonised over my spiritual development but somewhere deep in me that requires no understanding is a truth that this is exactly where I want to be beyond all things and even relationships with people in general. I believe I am at consequence to a greater force and going with the flow through whatever comes is the easiest route… although it takes practise!

Where I am today is undoubtedly the happiest and most content place so far on “my path”. Has my growth affected my relationships? You bet. Every time. I have been in more than a couple of relationships since I “woke up” which I feel now to be learning grounds, not regrets. In the background I was being propelled along by somewhat unconscious forces, meeting lots of people, reading and qualifying at various complimentary therapies and in the middle of it all was still having trouble in my love life but making the excuse that “well he’s not as spiritual as me, so no wonder this relationship isn’t working” as a way to explain my failing partnerships. I thought I knew better than them and indeed perhaps yes growth rates were different, but different to what?

Many times I have heard “we are all spiritual beings having a human experience” so none of us can claim to be more spiritual than the other really if that story has any grain of truth. But it is so easy to fall into a trap of judging the rights and wrongs of others based on what you believe to be the truth or the right way of life. When we judge from a perceived religious or spiritual angle it is just as harmful as judging about anything else. Don’t forget that truly God like people radiate endless love, compassion and understanding. They rarely judge. They are humble and don’t feel the need to preach or convert the unwashed.

Symbiotic relationships are those that function on great attachment and a feeling of needing the other to fulfill happiness and desires. These relationships can suffer the greatest casualties when one partner starts to understand that happiness does come from within first and the other person wonders what the heck has become of their once needy and comfortable partner.

So how can we become more aware of our spiritual or religious transformation while preserving and strengthening our relationship?

Firstly try to practise the art of allowing. Allow your partner to be different. Your hobby of new found awakening is just yours. I call it a hobby for purposes of comparison with perhaps golf, tennis or tiddly winks that may stir the heart of your boy/girlfriend. You may never see any joy or fun in buying the latest putter but to them it’s as much an elixir in terms of inner joy as the latest writings of Byron Katie.

Understand that your metamorphosis can cause insecurity and worries for your loved one. Take the time to listen and understand their concerns and always the right communication (as discussed in previous articles) will see you both through anything, given a good lump of love and understanding.

Never be under the illusion that your partner should think or be like you. Symbiotic relationships are ultimately unhappy. Differentiation is healthy and the only way forward. Loving your partner because they are different must be the goal. Loving someone warts n all is a challenge for sure, but in the accepting of them you accept yourself. What a relief in the long run!

An age old saying I know but put yourself in your partners shoes as much as you can. For example, don’t assume that changing your house and relationship space into little India will make your partner eventually see the Light. If you came home to find a putting green installed in the middle of your living room, I am sure you would have something to say about it!

By all means share your life together but in a give and take way. Avoid the tendency to know best about God and the Universe, because whatever you have read is only another person’s take on it, a story in essence. Your interpretation of what you know is just that, so share it with your honey rather than ram it as the new gospel according to you. We all have a path that we have an inner yearning to follow whatever are our passions and desires and no one human is the same as another so what fires me won’t be the same as my man but in sharing life it means we can enjoy some of the same things and others we do with others or alone. How good is that!

And lastly one of the biggest and most interesting observations I have made is that even if a couple are following the same spiritual or religious persuasion the relationship is not guaranteed to be a happily ever after.

The educational work I do with couple theorises that healing and growth into wholeness and to complete the unfinished business of childhood, is its ultimate goal. Through suffering in the past you may find yourself on a spiritual or religious path to give you an anchor and a feeling of safety and at all costs you are going to hang onto that as the only right way to be when you enter a relationship. Certain tools or methods may work for you when you experience the next difficult place in life but not your partner and if you are both trying to “tool” each other then you have double whammy know-alls thinking they know best.

As I have mentioned already I believe we are being guided and shown the way every day of our lives and our deepest instinct is the compass for life so simply loving the now and the person you are with is all you can do…let go.

Jogging Bad For Weight Loss and Fitness? Yes!

WHY JOGGING IS BAD FOR WEIGHT LOSS AND FITNESS

Drive down any scenic road on a weekend morning, and you’re likely to see more joggers than scenery. You might feel jealous at how fit and energetic they look, and perhaps even a twinge of shame as you look down at the box of donuts in the seat next to you which was your purpose for being out this beautiful morning.

But are your feelings of jealousy and shame justified? Should it be you out there in high end cool running gear jogging along to shed some pounds and get more fit?

After a careful analysis, we think you’ll agree the correct answer is NO, that should not be you. Why?

Because Jogging is BAD for weight loss and fitness.

While you definitely should be looking for ways to lose weight and become more fit, millions of people are doing more harm than good choosing jogging as their form of exercise. Can millions of people be wrong? Well, grab a donut, read on and decide for yourself.

FIRST A FEW DEFINITIONS

Ok, let’s be clear who and what we are talking about with some definitions:

JOGGER – Person who runs 1 hour per workout session at a pace of 5 miles per hour (12 minutes per mile). Since many joggers keep a faster pace than that. We will also address “Runners” who keep an 8 mile per hour pace (under 8 minutes per mile). These definitions are provided by the Mayo Clinic Weight Loss Website.

WEIGHT LOSS – The losing of weight per your scale or your clothes feeling more loose. Sorry, buying new, larger clothes does not qualify under this definition (be great if it would, eh?).

FITNESS – There are many ways to define fitness. We have chosen one that hopefully matters to the most people: A person’s overall physical health measured by their ability to successfully perform a wide variety of functional tasks.

WHY JOGGING IS BAD FOR WEIGHT LOSS AND FITNESS – THE EVIDENCE
CALORIC DEFICIT

You will likely outeat the calories you burn while jogging or running

According to the Mayo Clinic, a 160 pound person who jogs for an hour will burn 584 calories. A 160 pound runner ramps up the calories burned in an hour to 986. If you weigh more you burn more calories, if you weigh less you burn less. Many people don’t jog for an hour per workout, but we want joggers to have a chance at success here so we’ll pretend they all do.

In order for our jogger to lose weight as a direct result of this workout they will need to ensure they do not eat more calories than the 584-986 they just burned. This is what’s called the “caloric deficit” and it’s probably the most widely accepted and proven method to weight loss.

How realistic is that? Not very. An hour of any exercise tends to create a pretty serious appetite at some point later that day (which would be the worst time to eat it by the way), let alone the feeling of “entitlement” that comes from a workout well done. So most joggers (from here forward when I say joggers I am including “runners” unless noted) are going to head out for a nice meal to celebrate their efforts. A meal that will have much higher calories than what they would eat if they didn’t jog.

But does it really take a huge meal to make jogging or running a net loser for weight loss? The Power Bar you eat right before the run has 230 calories, that bagel with the cream cheese “schmear” you eat with your running group after the run has 400 or more calories, as does ONE decent sized slice of pepperoni pizza you’ve surely earned. If you decide to splurge on dessert because you jogged today, any decent one will surely add 500 or more calories. We won’t even mention the couple extra beers or glasses of wine…oops, guess we just did!

So it’s a good bet that joggers and even runners will add enough calories to their diets on exercise days to outeat what they just burned, which at best will be a breakeven, and very often will create a net caloric (as in WEIGHT) GAIN.

But we are not stopping there. What about on those days you don’t jog? How many people are really that disciplined to cut back on their eating since they won’t be burning those additional calories? More often, you hear “I’ll run this off tomorrow” as they head back for seconds on the pasta. So, now the increase in calories caused by jogging on workout days leads to more calories on non workout days, further increasing weight gain.

We contend this is how MOST people manage their eating, which means most joggers are gaining weight as a result of their jogging efforts.

To be fair, there are a select few people who do manage their calories more effectively than outlined above– we have a name for those people – “The 2% club”: The 2% of people who successfully maintain a low calorie diet. While members of the 2% club can create a caloric deficit by jogging, it still will not be a signficant deficit, and more importantly 2% Clubbers DON’T NEED TO JOG TO LOSE WEIGHT because they are successfully dieting!

MUSCLE CATABOLISM

You will actually lose muscle while jogging, especially since jogging does not involve your upper body in any meaningful way.

A “catabolic state” refers to the state in which your body is burning protein for its nutritional needs. A catabolic state is one you’d like to avoid as it means you are burning muscle to create energy for your exercise efforts. Yet joggers and runners are putting their bodies in this state every time they work out.

When you jog you are using your leg muscles which gives them a reason to grow stronger. That’s good, but to jog for an hour your body needs to find energy, and low intensity activities like jogging for an hour will need to access energy from all possible sources which include fat and muscle.

Here’s a simple question: What does jogging do to benefit your upper body? Simple answer: NOTHING. So along with the fat you want to burn, your body is burning muscle as part of it’s energy to let you do your jogging workouts. And, where is it most likely to “catabolize” this muscle? From your upper body where it’s not being used and therefore not needed.

And while jogging can give you stronger legs, a weak upper body is harmful to fitness as defined at the start of this essay. This is one example of how jogging harms your fitness. There’s more to come.

Most joggers and runners become aware of this and start doing upper body resistance training such as weight lifting to prevent muscle catabolism. That’s a really good idea, but that’s not jogging for fitness is it? No, that’s having to do MORE exercise to offset the negative effects of jogging!

Plus, studies indicate that every pound of muscle on your body takes 3 to 10 times more calories to support than fat, so allowing any muscle catabolism means you are actually slowing your metabolism throughout the day. Slower metabolism does not sound like a good thing for either weight loss or fitness does it?

Again, the devil’s advocate will want to argue that joggers can minmize muscle catabolism without supplemental exercise by using Target Heart Rate Training. Basically, this involves exercising at a rate below your “target” heart rate to encourage more fat burning. So now we are jogging slower which means we are burning fewer calories which harms our caloric deficit. This makes weight loss even more difficult. Now we’re confused. What’s the most effective way to jog again? Do we jog faster and burn more calories or jog slower and save more muscle?

ADAPTIVE RESPONSE

Your body will adapt to the challenge of jogging fairly quickly, thus making it progressively harder to lose weight or become more fit. Once your body adapts to jogging you enter a “death spiral” of needing to run further or faster or both to see any further improvement.

Adaptive response is just a fancy way of saying that your body will do it’s best to adjust to whatever level of exercise you are trying to do. It will “adapt”. This is why it’s a lot easier to complete the 1 hour jog after you have done it 10 times than it is the first time you try it.

But when it comes to weight loss, adaptive response is exactly what you don’t want. It means your body has reached a state where jogging is no longer a challenge, and because you are now capable of handling the task at hand, there is no reason to drop any additional fat or add any more muscle. In addition, your metabolism has a similar adapative response. You will be doing the same exercise, but whatever metabolic benefits you were getting will continue to decrease the better you get at it. You might think of this situation as a “plateau”.

As adaptive response makes your runs less and less effective from a fitness, metabolic and weight loss standpoint, joggers are left with 2 choices: run faster or run farther to give your body a new challenge that it needs to improve upon in order to adapt. Running faster or farther is not necessarily a bad thing, but it dramatically increases your chances of injury and also starts to take an excessive amount of time to perform an effective workout. Plus it’s HARD. A much harder jog (or run) that lasts a lot longer increases your chances of giving up on your jogging program. And if you do give up jogging because it becomes too much work to see any results, you are at risk of significant weight gain without an even more restrictive diet.

Bottom line, your adaptive response to jogging has a positive aspect in that it’s good for your ability to jog (not necessarily for your overall fitness–see PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS), but it’s BAD for your weight loss efforts, and it creates a never ending “death spiral” of harder, longer jogs or harder, faster runs that most people will have trouble staying with due to injury or lack of motivation.

INJURIES AND OTHER HEALTH ISSUES

Jogging’s repetitive motion over long periods of time makes joint injuries very likely. Other injury and health concerns come from the adaptive response death spiral mentioned above, running in traffic and in inclement weather.

Pavement is hard and unforgiving. Your legs pounding against it for thousands of steps per jogging session can cause serious short term and long term injuries to your joints and muscles.

Sure, there are good running shoes that can help prevent injuries, but sooner or later you’re bound to injure a knee or ankle or even worse, a hip while jogging.

There’s also the issue of running on the roads with automobile traffic which has been known to cause serious injury or even death. That cannot be considered a plus for joggers.

And, the sheer length of jogging, a repetitive motion for 1 full hour, increases the chance of a variety of injuries like shin splints or a variety of foot problems versus shorter forms of exercise due to muscle fatigue.

There’s more. Consideration must be given to the health and safety risk of running in inclement weather. Jogging in extreme heat or cold, rain, snow or worst of all icy conditions greatly increases the risk of injury or an illness that makes you miss workouts for a short period of time or possibly something worse.

Of course the treadmill offers a viable solution to many of these issues, but not all of them. And many joggers insist on jogging outdoors throughout the year. When they do, the risk of injuries and other health related issues is very real and should be considered in an evaluation of the benefits of jogging.

PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS

Jogging has few practical applications. Jogging is not a good form of training for most other activities — except for more jogging. Plus, the loss of upper body muscle and lower body joint problems that often result from jogging can actually decrease your overall fitness level.

Remember our definition of fitness: A person’s overall physical health measured by their ability to successfully perform a wide variety of functional tasks.

We would have to concede jogging could improve your abilities at the following activities:

1) More Jogging
2) Basketball – well not really the sprinting up and down the court to be competitive, but you can jog down to set up a half court play with the best of them.
3) Football – Jogging from the huddle to the line of scrimmage.
4) Baseball – Jogging to the dugout with a beer in your hand at your weekly softball league.

Umm, that’s all we can think of. The rest of the activities in the above sports and many others like skiing, tennis and golf require strength (both muscle and joint), the ability to use your body at full speed, as well as hand eye coordination, none of which are helped by jogging.

The fact that jogging has no practical applications as cross training for any other sport makes it a lot of time spent for very little benefit, except of course for #1 above–more jogging. This is especially true when you compare jogging to other exercise alternatives like strength training, and interval training. You can spend a lot less time exercising and become more effective at performing all sorts of other sports and activities. This in turn offers you more opportunities to have fun and improve your fitness. Does developing your jogging skills help you with any other activities or tasks you like to do?

THE VERDICT?

Based upon the overwhelming evidence outlined above, the verdict is Jogging is a BAD exercise for weight loss and fitness. Running for an hour at a faster pace does offer certain advantages over jogging but still ends up a net negative for weight loss and fitness when all the factors are considered.

SUNDAY DRIVING

So, the next time you head out for weekend donuts you can smile at thin or fit looking joggers, because now you know they didn’t get that way by only jogging. And when you get home, grab a maple custard (my favorite!) and spend 30 minutes studying weight loss and fitness plans that work on improving your body’s metabolism to solve the caloric deficit problem because there are much better ways than exercising endlessly and cutting calories. Also, a good fitness plan should prepare you for a wide variety of tasks and activities.

If you study hard and plan correctly, your exercise program should only take half the time the joggers spend but will take you much further down the road to weight loss and fitness.

We hope you do your homework and find the plan that’s right for you because being happy with your weight and fitness is a great feeling that everyone should enjoy.

10 Motivational Weight Loss Tips

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

One of the toughest things about losing weight is staying motivated when the weight isn’t coming off as quickly as you’d like. Most of us know exactly how to lose weight, but it’s the mental game that trips us up. With that in mind, here are ten top tips to help you keep losing pounds and inches.

Get Some Support

One of the best ways to stay motivated is find a friend or a group of people to use as a support system. This effectively allows you to borrow their motivation when your own is running low, and vice versa.

Ignore the Scales

On one hand, you do need to weigh yourself occasionally to make sure you’re progressing. On the other hand, the normal daily fluctuations in weight can make you crazy and destroy your motivation.

Make a Bet

If you make a wager to do something you really don’t want to do, like eat a can of dog food or shave your head, you’re going to have plenty of motivation to eat the right foods or get out and exercise.

Eat Things You Enjoy

There’s no reason you should exclude everything you enjoy from your diet. This will only lead to cravings that will make it hard to stay motivated, so have foods you like as much as possible within the confines of your diet.

Do Exercise You Enjoy

There are an infinite number of ways to exercise, so if you dread getting up in the morning because you have to go run, don’t run. Find something you like to do and you won’t have to worry about drumming up the motivation to do it.

Practice Visualisation

Take some time each day and imagine yourself as you want to be, fixing the image in your mind for those times that you find yourself feeling less than enthused about diet and exercise.

Set Small Goals with Concrete Dates

One thing that saps motivation is having a goal that seems far away. Instead of focusing on the thirty pounds you need to lose, focus on losing five by a specific date.

Reward Yourself

Set up a system of rewards so that every time you hit one of your weight loss goals, you reward yourself in some way. Buy that pair of jeans you’ve wanted, or have some food that you’ve been holding off of eating.

Don’t Buy Food You Shouldn’t Eat

It’s a lot easier to eat right when temptation isn’t constantly looking you right in the face. One of the best ways to keep your motivation high is by making it easy to eat right, and this means not having the wrong foods around. This isn’t to say you can’t have certain foods, but don’t have them constantly around.

Find a Sport

You’re going to be a lot more motivated to eat right and exercise the way you know you should when you have a game or competition coming up. Be it tennis or a road race, having a sport can keep you working towards your goal even when you don’t really feel like it, which is what motivation is all about.

12 Tips For Summer Travel With Diabetes

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

It’s that time of year again, when the warm breezes of summer are blowing and we get the urge to travel. It’s a great time to see new sites, or visit with family and friends. I recommend a bit of preparation so traveling with diabetes doesn’t have to be a challenge and be more enjoyable:

  1. Have a Plan. About one month prior to your trip, visit your doctor and tell them about your destination. They can help you understand about potential vaccinations and if you need them when you travel abroad. This gives you time if you develop any reaction to a vaccination. Get a physical with blood work to make sure all your diabetes numbers are in order. Discuss any issues that concern you before you leave.
  2. Get Organized. Make a list of your medications, doses and reasons why you take them. Include your allergies on the list. If you are traveling alone, you need to have an emergency contact in your phone and listed on your medication card. Better yet, invest in MEDIC-ALERT, a service that has an 800 number with all your health info available. Call 1-800-432-5378 for details.
  3. Carry Identification. You need to have identification indicating you have diabetes. If you are traveling abroad, you should have the I.D. in the language of the country you are visiting. Carry a simple phrase book in the language of the country you are visiting. A medical I.D. bracelet is an important way to communicate your health conditions with others, if you cannot.
  4. Carry a Letter. Most of the time, you do not need a letter indicating you are carrying needles or lancets, but it is a good idea just in case.
  5. Stock Up on Supplies & Medications. I recommend having one extra week of your medications and supplies if you are traveling in the U.S., and two weeks of supplies if you are traveling outside of the country. This will take the worry out of unexpected changes in your travel plans.
  6. Health Insurance & Trip Insurance. Check with your own insurance carrier and see what coverage is available prior to your trip. Many times, if you travel with a tour group, the insurance does NOT include preexisting conditions, including issues with your diabetes. Remember, Medicare does NOT cover your health costs outside of the United States.
  7. Carry All Diabetes Supplies. Carry all of your diabetic supplies, including your glucose meter, with you. Your diabetic supplies are sensitive to heat, light and humidity. Medications can also be sensitive to these conditions. Always carry glucose tabs and a food snack consisting of protein and carbohydrates. Peanut butter and an apple, or cheese and whole-wheat crackers are convenient options. This will help you avoid hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), which can make you weak for hours if not treated promptly. This will help you feel your best and have energy to enjoy your vacation.
  8. Move. When traveling by car, plane, or train, you should stand and walk around, wiggling and rotating your ankles and feet. Do not cross your legs except at the ankles to promote better circulation. Sitting for long periods of time with no movement may encourage the formation of blood clots, which can lead to more serious complications. People with diabetes are more prone to blood clots.
  9. Drink. Flying and hot weather can lead to dehydration. I recommend drinking fluids that do not contain caffeine or alcohol. Water is always your best bet. If you are unsure about the local water supply, drink bottled water to avoid potential gastrointestinal problems.
  10. Keep a First Aid Kit Handy. No matter how or where you travel, it is always a good idea to have a first aid kit that contains the following items (at a minimum): Band-Aids, antibiotic ointment, sunscreen, bug spray, over-the-counter medicines for heartburn and diarrhea, and aspirin or other medicine for fever or pain.
  11. Eat in Moderation & Stay Active. I definitely recommend enjoying new foods and flavors. However, watch your portion sizes. Be careful with all-you-can-eat buffets and all the glorious food they serve on cruises. When traveling abroad, be careful where you eat to avoid stomach issues. Traveling is a good time to enjoy activity and exercise. Enjoy walks, bike rides, swimming, golf, tennis and other fun activities.
  12. Take Good Care of Your Feet. Wear pool shoes by the pool, in the shower and at the beach for protection. Wear good sturdy and supportive shoes and fresh socks daily. You may also consider putting powder between toes to reduce the risk of developing fungus from sweaty feet. Apply lotion to feet and heels after showering. Taking care of your feet will allow you to enjoy your sightseeing even more.

Live life to the fullest and enjoy EVERY MINUTE! Take pictures and remember all the good times and be safe.

NOTE: Consult your doctor first to make sure my recommendations fit your special health needs.

Is Fishing A Sport?

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

I think there are several categories that differentiates sport from other activities, these include, competitiveness, physicality, opponents, rules and regulations. In this article I intend to address each of these categories individually to answer those who oppose the idea of fishing as a sport.

Without doubt fishing or angling as it is sometimes referred to, is recognized as having the largest membership of participants of any activity in the world. At any given time around the world somebody somewhere will be throwing a line or net in a body of water with the expectation that when they pull it back up, it will contain a fish or sea food of some description.

Now lets talk about our categories, first one competitiveness. Whether a person goes fishing just once in their lifetime, or goes each weekend or even more regularly, there can be no doubt that they are always hoping and wishing for the catch of a lifetime. If they are fishing alone they want to beat whatever they have caught before, be it size or quantity of fish or even the time taken to catch it, they always want to improve on previous efforts. If fishing with a partner or in a group leads to even more competitiveness, with each wanting to be top angler on that trip. So in the category of competitiveness, it is definitely a sport. There are myriad of competitions and records kept around the world to attest to the competitiveness of fishing.

Our next category is physicality, we know most sport requires a degree of physical exertion, does fishing? Undoubtedly, anybody who has seen a sport fisherman struggling with a large, powerful fish on the end of his line for hours and hours on end will know this to be true. Also the terrain that fishermen must conquer to chase that elusive beauty, such as deep oceans, to jungle streams to rocky clifftops, these wild areas can be difficult to access and extremely dangerous, No suburban oval or tennis court for these guys.

Another aspect of sports is the idea that the opponents have an equal chance of winning the competition, be it a person, team or fish. Any true fisherman will tell you what they enjoy most about fishing is the hunt and the test of their skills, and to this end they use equipment that gives their opponent a chance of escaping the hook, this is where their technique and knowledge comes in and it is the use of these that create their enjoyment. Of course as in all sports there are cheats, these are the people that do not abide by the rules and regulations, and do not give their opponents any chance at all. They are not sport fishermen in any sense of the word.

Our last category is that of rules and regulations: is fishing regulated? You bet it is! There are rules that govern every aspect of fishing, these include catch sizes, bag limits, when and where you can fish, equipment you can and cannot use, species you can catch etc, etc.

So is fishing a sport? Of course it is! And may all fishermen be able to enjoy their sport for many years to come.

Don’t Let Life Just Pass – Enjoy It!

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

The next time you’re in a supermarket, or on a subway or in a large group, take a look around. How many of the people around you look like they’re really enjoying life. How many look enthusiastic and full of joy? I’m willing to bet that it’s not many. Most are probably rushing to work or home from work, and don’t have time to worry about enjoying life. They’re too busy. But you should make time to enjoy life. You should do things you really enjoy every day.

Optimism and enthusiasm are two of the major traits of people who enjoy life. Enthusiasm is, in fact, critical for a full life, and if you’ve got enthusiasm you will also have an optimistic outlook. Both can make a big difference in your life, and both are needed to really enjoy it.

An enthusiastic outlook is not something you are born with. You have to have the right attitude for it, and it will only happen if you let it happen. Do you wake up in the morning full of zeal — raring to go and looking forward to the day. Or do you drag yourself out of bed dreading what is ahead, grabbing a quick breakfast and heading for a job you hate? If so, you need to develop enthusiasm and the best way to do this is cultivate a love of living, a love for people, and a love of beauty. Tell yourself you’re going to be enthusiastic and believe it. Then act enthusiastic.

A friend of mine has enthusiasm written all over him. Every time I see him he’s smiling and cheerful. One day he said to me, “I’ve been retired for almost ten years now, and I’ve had a ball every since the day I retired.” I laughed, but I was sure it was true. All people should get this much joy out of life.

One of the things needed to enjoy life, particularly as you get older, is keeping busy. Keeping busy and not being bored is one of the keys to a happy life. And indeed there are so many things to do with your free time — you never need to get bored.

Below I give a list of things that should help you enjoy life more.

1. Enjoy the Little things

Everything you try to do for enjoyment doesn’t have to be a big event: a vacation at a famous resort, a fishing trip to Alaska, a cruise in the Caribbean, or sky diving. They’re all great, but you can only do them once in a while (if you’re lucky). It’s the little things that really count; they’re the things that keep your enthusiasm up and give you a feeling of joy every day, and they are easy to come by. The old saying, ” Stop and smell the roses” may be worn out, but it’s still worth thinking about.

By little things I mean things like enjoying your first cup of coffee in the morning — in particular, leaning back, savoring the taste and smell, and really enjoying it. Also, enjoying the morning sunlight streaming in through the window, enjoying beautiful sunsets, and a walk down the garden path. Nature always makes you feel good and melts away stress. So enjoy the view of snow on a distant mountain, or just a drive or walk in the country.

2. Enjoy the People Around You

People are critical for enjoyment. Surround yourself with positive, enthusiastic people; enthusiasm and joy are contagious, so talk and laugh with them. Enjoy a night out with your spouse. Play with your kids (play games with them). And pets also bring a lot of joy into your life.

People are usually the happiest when they’re around other people — particularly, optimistic, enthusiastic people (in fact, it’s a good idea to avoid pessimistic, negative people. Some of it may rub off on you).

3. Make Up an “Enjoyment” List

One of the best ways to get enjoyment out of life is to make up a list of the things you really enjoy doing. Then read through them and think about them. How many of them have you done lately? Probably very few. Why? Not enough time? Make time.

In fact you should make up two lists. The first should be a list of everything you love to do, and the second should be a more specific list of when you will do these things.

Can’t think of anything? When was the last time you went dancing, biking, fishing, skiing, big game hunting, golfing, playing tennis or mountain climbing? I’m sure you can come up with a good list. (The rest of the things in my list may give you some ideas.)

4. Learn Something New

Learning, happiness and satisfaction with life all go hand in hand. People are never bored when they’re learning something new. You could take a course at night school, or just read a “how-to” book.

A few suggestions are:

  • Learn to write. Begin by writing in a journal or dairy. Then after you gain some confidence, try submitting articles to magazines. You may surprise yourself.
  • Write poetry. Poetry isn’t a big seller, but millions of people enjoy writing it.
  • Learn to use the computer if you don’t already know how (this won’t apply to many young people). If you already use the computer develop a blog.
  • Learn to cook. Try out new recipes.

5. Learn to Sing or Play a Musical Instrument

Music plays such a large role in our lives. They say there are people who do not enjoy music, but I find it hard to believe. Just listening to music can bring a lot of joy into your life. But there is so much more you can do.

Singing makes everyone feel good. Maybe the only singing you do is in the shower, but the opportunities for singing in public are much greater today than they were a few years ago, and the reason is karaoke. And you don’t have to be a particularly good singer. Furthermore, as you sing more and more you’ll find that your singing will improve significantly. Karaoke groups are active in every city and town across America — in cafes, recreation centers, churches and so on.

Another thing that will likely bring you a lot of satisfaction and joy is learning to play a musical instrument. You may have taken piano lessons when you were young, and forgotten most of what you learned, Now is the time to begin again amd really learn it. Or maybe you would prefer the guitar. The important thing is to enjoy it (don’t worry about becoming a professional). But it’s equally important not to become discouraged — keep at it

6. Try a New Hobby

A new hobby is a great way to spend your spare time, and it will likely bring you a lot of enjoyment. The list of hobbies is endless. Photography is particularly enjoyable, and it has become easier and cheaper with digital cameras (you don’t have to worry about wasting a lot of film). And there are the old standbys: stamp and coin collecting. Gardening is another hobby enjoyed by millions of people, and it has a dividend — fresh vegetables. Others are bird-watching, restoring old cars, amateur astronomy, beadwork, jewelry making, model trains, and model planes, to name just a few.

7. Limit Your Time Watching TV

I love certain programs on TV as much as anyone, but sitting in front of the TV night after night and on weekends, watching everything that comes on is merely letting life pass. You’re spending all your time watching other people’s lives, and even though they might be exciting lives, you’re not living them. You’re just watching. What you want is to “live” life, not just watch it pass. You want to enjoy life.

Everyone loves certain programs — sports events and so on — and there’s no problem with that. The problem is becoming a “couch potato” in front of the TV.

8. Take “Enjoyment” Breaks

It’s a good idea every so often to take a break and do something you really like to do. This is particularly important if work takes up much of your time. These breaks can be relatively short: 15 or 20 minutes, or up to an hour. If you’re an avid photographer, for example, you could take your camera to work and take a few minutes at lunch to take some photos. There are, in fact, a lot of things you could do over the lunch hour: take a quick swim at a nearby pool, visit a nearby art gallery or museum. Or you could just go shopping, if that’s what you enjoy the most.

9. Make Time for Laughter

Laughter always makes you feel good. When you’re laughing, you’re enjoying life. Furthermore, it relieves stress, and makes you happy. If you surround yourself with happy, enthusiastic, optimistic people, you’ll likely do a lot of laughing as you talk to them. You can also get laughter from reading humorous books, watching TV or humorous videos or CDs. The important thing is to bring as much laughter into your life as possible.

10. Keep Your Body Fit and Healthy

You can’t enjoy life if you have aches and pains, or can’t get around easily. The three things you need in the proper amount to keep your body working well are;

  • Exercise. You should exercise every day, and make sure you do both aerobic and weights. Aerobics keep your lungs and heart in shape, while weights keep you muscles in shape. Stretching is also important.
  • Sleep. You need at least 7 hours (some people need 8) of sleep each night. Keeping a regular sleep schedule (the same bedtime and rise times) helps you sleep better.
  • Nutrition. Make sure you get the proper vitamins, minerals and so on. Vegetables, fruit and whole grain are particularly important.

11. Consider Stopping Things You Don’t Enjoy

Are there things that you do, but don’t enjoy doing? I’m not talking about yardwork or chores; most people don’t care for them, but if you’ve got a yard they’re something you have to do. Also I’m not talking about going to school. But maybe your job gives you little enjoyment. If possible, make changes so that you enjoy it more. Enjoy the people at work.

A Man’s Guide to Dressing in a Business Casual Environment

Monday, August 30th, 2010

Many companies began instituting a business casual dress code many years ago with the creation of “Casual Friday.” Over the last ten to fifteen years, casual Friday has turned into everyday for many businesses. If you find yourself in a business casual environment, care should be taken in the choices of work attire. An employee in this environment must remember that casual or not, their appearance makes the first impression, and each employee will, at some point, be the “face” of the company to someone. Gentlemen, business casual means much more than khaki pants and a polo golf shirt. Don’t be afraid to show some personality through your appearance, just be sure to show some restraint. For example, T-shirts, either printed or plain, have no place in a professional workplace. Also, do everyone you work with a favor and do not wear any shoe that exposes your feet. Leave the sandals for the beach and always wear socks to work.

Now that we have looked at two rules that should be considered unbreakable, let’s tackle some options that the business casual man does have.

The Suit

Believe it or not, this is an option in the business casual environment. Today’s suits are designed to be more versatile. Many styles can be worn without a tie or with a crew or mock neck shirt. A sweater can even be added during the colder months.

The main thing to remember is that it is still a suit. It should be worn only after being pressed and cleaned. Also, be sure the pants have a clean and crisp crease. You can dress the suit down, but it still has its place and appeal. The point of the dressed down suit is to look more casual and relaxed, but still look sharp and well put together. In terms of keeping the suit in good shape, try not to have it cleaned any more than four times a year. Dry cleaning too much can compromise the fabric.

The Sportcoat

Today, there are too many options available to touch on each. The important thing to remember about the sportcoat is, much like the suit, look for versatility. Many jackets can be worn in a business casual environment by day and dressed down with a nice pair of jeans by night. Also, be sure to keep it in good condition, just like the suit.

There is a difference between a sportcoat and a Blazer. Really, no man should be without a Navy Blazer in his closet. This is simply one of those items that every man can use at some point, and in this man’s opinion, it is just as necessary as a pair of jeans or khakis. Stick with wool for your Blazer because it just looks and feels better than blended fabrics. The blazer is not as casual as many sportcoats, but, like the suit, it can be dressed down and keep that well put together look.

Shirts

I cannot say this enough, but do not wear t-shirts, printed or solid to work. They simply are not appropriate in a professional environment. The three options here are polo or golf shirts, mock neck shirts, or button-up shirts. Mock neck shirts come in a variety of fabrics and look great under suits and sportcoats. Polo shirts also come in variety of colors and fabrics and are a fairly traditional option for business casual.

More and more men are wearing button-up shirts, normally worn with a tie, with an open collar. The important thing here is to be sure to keep them clean and pressed. Just because the look is less formal doesn’t mean it should be sloppy. There are several different collar choices, from button down, to spread, to pinpoint. There is really no rule here, but my suggestion is to try all styles and choose what you are most comfortable wearing.

Another note about button-up shirts is the French-cuff shirt. It has become far more acceptable to wear a tasteful French-cuff shirt with a nice set of cufflinks, without the tie. It adds a little touch of a classic look without dressing you up too much. Again, this is another one of those personal preference things. My suggestion is to give it a try. If you don’t like it, don’t wear it.

Pants

Don’t wear jeans to work. Now that we have dealt with that, what should you wear? Khaki pants are a very traditional option. Be sure the ones you wear to work are clean with a crisp crease, and that they fit properly. Wearing these everyday can make you seem, well…boring.

Change things up with charcoal, black, or olive. Even a pair of gray pants can work with the right shirt and jacket. We come to another personal preference with pleats versus flat front. Again try both and go with comfort.

Something to be mindful of is how you wear your pants. Many men (most men) in America unfortunately have a bit of a gut (including yours truly). Stop fooling yourself and stop hiking up your pants twenty times a day. If you have a gut, accept it and don’t wear the pants below your true waist line. You may think it looks better, but it doesn’t. Actually, it makes your stomach look bigger because it hangs over the waist of the pants. One option here is to add a pair of bracers. Bracers are becoming much more acceptable for men under 70 years old. In fact, I know many men that can’t stand wearing a belt now that they were willing to take the leap of faith and try a pair of bracers.

Shoes

Do not wear tennis shoes, sandals, or flip flops. This is simply poor taste. Look for a nice dress shoe, either lace up or slip on, and keep them polished. By the way, stick with the basic colors such as black, brown, or burgundy. While your taste may lean towards the indigo dress shoes, they simply are not professional.

There you have it. Business casual done right is really not that difficult, but many men would rather have a root canal than spend much time on how they dress. If you are that guy, and you just can’t get it right, your best bet is to visit your local men’s store. Make sure it s a men’s store, not one of the big anchor retailers in a mall. Any rep at a men’s store worth his salt will be able to give you great advice.

Why Does My Arm Hurt?

Monday, August 30th, 2010

Sometimes it’s easy to figure out why a limb hurts. On the other hand, sometimes it’s not as obvious. Like many rather generic pain issues, knowing the cause is required before you can stop the pain.

Many times, the cause is, if not obvious, fairly easy to diagnose. If you’ve had a fall, played a lot of tennis or spent long hours doing repetitive wrist movements, the cause and appropriate treatment should be easy to come up with. However, if none of these seems likely, what does it mean and how is it treated?

1) Arthritis: There are many forms of this painful condition and some of them can affect your hand and arm. An injury or general wear and tear can indicate osteoarthritis. If the pain is in the small bones of the wrist and hand, it could be rheumatoid arthritis, and gout can affect any joint.

Anti-inflammatory medications and topical pain relievers are common treatments for most types of arthritis. Willow bark and gotu kola are helpful both internally and topically. Capsaicin could also help, by turning off the pain signal to your brain. If you are allergic to aspirin, have gout or are on aspirin therapy, you may want to skip the willow, as it has the same chemical constituent.

2) Carpal Tunnel: The bones in the wrist are called carpal bones, and they have very tiny holes that the nerves go through to reach the hand. Repetitive motions, such as typing, can cause these nerves to be inflamed. As there is no place for this swelling to go, pain, numbness and other symptoms occur.

Prevention is your best bet. Take a break from a job that causes the same movements to be done over and over. Do some simple exercises such as rotating your hand at the wrist, etc. You may wish to consult with your doctor to find the right exercises for your needs.

3) Heart Attack: Pain in your left arm, shoulder, back and jaw can indicate a heart attack in progress. You may have other symptoms, such as heaviness in the chest, chest pain, difficulty breathing and changes in your skin. If you suspect a heart attack, call 911. This requires immediate medical attention in order to prevent as much damage as possible.

Getting a diagnosis for what causes your pain may be the best step you can take. Knowing for certain what is wrong can help you pinpoint the best response. Speak to your doctor about any medications or supplements you take and any other medical problems you have or had. This way, the doctor can help you prevent lasting problems from your current pain.

Golf – Practicing at Golf Vacation Schools

Monday, August 30th, 2010

Imagine a period with no phone calls from customers and business associates, no appointments for meetings, and no work related disturbance at all. A stress-free, worry-free world with only you and the golf course would be the most ideal holiday time for anyone.

The golf vacation schools are there to give you an opportunity to practice your swings as you take a breather from work. Just relax with golf as you take a vacation with friends and family who also adore the sport.

The game of golf is now growing in popularity and finding a good vacation school is really not very difficult. Such schools are now springing up everywhere due to the fact that almost everyone wants to learn how to play this beautiful sport. This means that in whatever area you choose to vacation, there is high chances of finding a place to train nearby. There are some items to expect and they are listed here below.

What is included: It is normal to find a majority of golf vacation schools with deluxe accommodations and meals as one package. It is possible to enjoy facilities like fitness gym, tennis courts as well as beach clubs which are best during fair weather.

Costs: These charges are normally very high during the high season for golf and this covers the spring and fall. It is common for the same to dip when it reaches winter.

For the students who are not after playing golf professionally, all they need is to learn the basics. This will cost something like $300 to $400 for a round of golf, which will also come with a cart, a sleeve of balls, practice range and the cost of storing the clubs.

If you are one of those who want to perfect their swinging power, then the unlimited package would be your best bet. By this you can golf all day long and just pay about $600 to $700 each day.

It is recommended that you make reservations on phone. A majority of these schools like to offer early arrivals some discounts. Also there are good offers to large groups and for honeymooners as well. Many travel agents have very good deals so go out and look for the best offers.

How to Clean a Down Comforter

Sunday, August 29th, 2010

Cleaning your down comforter will keep it feeling new, soft and comfortable.

What to Know Before You Clean
Buying a down comforter is like getting a puppy – when you finally bring it home, you realize you have no idea how to take care of it. Years later, your once-beautiful down comforter is frayed, dirty, and severely lacking fluff.

Before you read on about how to clean your comforters, keep in mind that the less you wash your down pillows and comforters, the longer they’ll last. Cleaning is hard to resist – especially if you watch those horrific Dateline specials on dust mites and bed bugs. When it comes to comforter care, you have a few cleaning options.

Dry Cleaning
It’s the most expensive way to clean your down comforters, but with dry cleaning, you can avoid a hernia caused by lifting a forty-pound blanket into the washer. And your laundry machine won’t be tied up while you complete the all-day process. Look for cheap and reputable cleaners that specialize in down comforters.

Dry cleaning is your safest bet. But keep in mind it costs approximately $25 to clean a down comforter. Read your comforter’s special care instructions. Some down comforter manufacturers will list dry cleaning as your only option. Some will say not to dry clean your comforter at all. Reading the instructions can prevent a down comforter disaster.

Washing It Yourself
Save a few bucks by washing your bedding at home. Many people avoid this because they fear the blanket will end up with the feathers on one side. Or that the “comfort,” will be flattened out and it will no longer feel new.

Wash your down comforters only when necessary – harsh washing sometimes damages the down clusters and strips them of their natural oils.

Size Matters
Make sure your machine is big enough. Most recommend you use a front-loading commercial washer. If your washer isn’t up to snuff, head to the laundry mat.

Avoid Liquid Detergent
Standard liquid detergents use wax in their formulas, which can cause down feathers to bunch together. Instead, there are special mild detergents made for cleaning down comforters. Don’t forget to spot-treat any stains before you wash.

Fluff Your Down Comforter in the Wash
Set the washing machine on delicate and allow the water and mild detergent to mix before placing the comforter inside. Also place a clean, white pair of tennis shoes (no laces attached) to keep the down evenly distributed.

After your down comforter has washed, it will look very flat but don’t be alarmed. Place it in the dryer and add dryer balls to fluff it up. Down comforters take a few hours to dry but you want to make sure there’s no moisture left, so it doesn’t flatten the feathers.

Use these tips and your feather bedding will feel new for years.

Is it True That Fat People Are Dumb?

Sunday, August 29th, 2010

Of course not! This is a typical case of stereotype. We often heard of people making snide remarks at their heavier counterparts. It is unfortunate that negative traits such as lazy, slow, dumb, greedy to name a few, are often associated with people who are overweight.

This kind of pressure that society adds on to people who are overweight is definitely overwhelming enough for them to go all out and seek for the solution to help them lose weight. There are some who even went on the extreme to starve themselves thinking that this is the fastest way to lose all the extra weight they carry on them. Unfortunately, after subjecting themselves to all sorts of fad diets they can lay their hands on, more often than not, they end up struggling helplessly as the unwanted weights keep on coming.

How many of you have wished that you own the perfect body; washboard abs, toned arms and legs and not forgetting a firm butt? This is the dream body shape that everybody yearns to have. So the next question is, is the dream body shape even existent? I guess it is not hard to identify famous personalities and celebrities who cut that dream body. Maybe it is in the genes, you may say. Well, true to some certain extend as genetic makeup does determine our body shape. So does that mean that the rest of us who are not blessed with good genes are banished to remain fat? Of course not! If you do not incorporate healthy eating habits and regular exercise into your lifestyle, having good genes does not guarantee that you will stay slim forever. Therefore, the bottom line is to adopt a healthy lifestyle through a balanced diet and consistent exercise. This is your best bet to lose weight.

It is actually unrealistic to yearn to achieve the perfect body shape as we are unique individuals and some people may have smaller frames and their body may react differently to the same kind of diet and workout. If you are planning to lose weight, the first thing to do is to set a realistic target which is achievable. No point targeting to lose 10kg in a month and you will only end up in frustration and quit soon after.

You must remember that diet and physical activities go hand in hand if you intend to embark on a weight loss program. What you need to do next after setting your target is to evaluate your eating habits. Start a food journal and record every morsel of food that goes into your mouth. You have to be truthful with yourself if you serious in wanting to identify what are your bad eating habits that are sabotaging your weight loss efforts. Next, do you revamp your wardrobe whenever there is a sale going on or when the season changes? Similarly, give your good old fridge the much needed revamp. Trash all the junk food or processed food you stored in the fridge. Replace them with fruits and veggies if possible. Substitute items in your fridge with lower fat options if possible.

After reviewing your eating habits comes exercise. I know that some people just hate to exercise and the only exercise they do is to switch on their TV using the remote control and reach for that packet of chips or the jar of chocolate chips cookies. Most of us lead a sedentary lifestyle and it is indeed a challenge to start on a exercise program. However, you need to realize that you have to make a choice to either lose weight or continue to blame your genes and remain fat. Now you decide on what size you want to be!

There is a saying “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step” If you are determined to lose weight, you just have to get started somewhere and fit in exercise to your daily routine. It helps if you can engage in activities that you like. Go swimming if you hate running, pick up tennis or badminton if you would prefer. And if you have budget constraints, try brisk walking or you can choose to climb the stairs instead of taking the elevator wherever possible. Try to walk to the grocery store instead of driving. It takes about 3 weeks to build up a habit and once you have gained momentum, it will not be long before you can successfully incorporate all the good eating habits and regular exercise into your daily life. Start slow and gradually increase the frequency and intensity.

It may sound difficult but all the effort and hard work is worthwhile when you start to see that you no longer pant as hard after running after the bus or climbing that flight of stairs and eventually, you get to fit into your skinny jeans again. So, is there anything else that is stopping you to start your weight loss program?
