The reason for this article is to give you a better understanding of the basketball point guard position and how to actually become an effective point guard.
You see, in basketball, the point guard is the leader. He is fearless, passionate, and has a high understanding for the game, who would do anything to help his team win.
The basketball point guard puts his team first and uses his amazing vision and creativity to find his teammates and pass it to them at the right time for an easy bucket. A basketball point guard is much like the quarterback of a football team. He, so to speak, “runs the show” and makes critical game changing decisions.
Basically, he is the person the other players look to for leadership and to make plays. He has great passion and love for the game and it shows in the way he plays.
Without an effective point guard there is no way a team can go far and win on a consistent basis.
So HOW do you become an effective point guard?
Well, it’s really quite simple.
Here are the top three easiest ways for you to start your journey as an effective point guard:
1.) Everyday and in every situation of your daily life, BE the LEADER and make the KEY decision in solving a problem, getting something done, or whenever you have to make some sort of decision. Don’t let others choose or decide for you. You are the one who calls the shots and tells your friends or family where to go or what to do.
For example, you and your friend want to go out to a party, but your friend doesn’t know what time you guys should meet up or what to wear to the party. In most cases, someone who isn’t a leader, a.k.a. “follower” would just say, “Um, I don’t know, what time do you want to meet up?…What do you think I should wear?”
This is how non-leaders handle situation like this. But you are a leader and so in this situation you tell your friend where you guys will meet and what time and that you will wear something that you know you will look good in. Case closed. No more girl gossip. End of discussion.
2.) Keep your HEAD and EYES UP in every area of your life, minimizing the amount of time you look at the ground. Do this for 2 days. 2 days is great because most people give up too early when they have to do something for a long period of time.
So, if you do this for just 2 days you will get to see and enjoy the immediate results that you get from doing this exercise.
What this will do is it will improve your peripheral and regular vision when you’re on the court, which is crucial for a basketball point guard to have in his arsenal.
More importantly, it will allow you to gain the habit of ALWAYS looking UP when you’re playing, which will allow you to CLEARLY see the whole floor and can locate any teammate with laser beam precision and accuracy handing them an easy opportunity for a basket.
This will automatically create endless passing and scoring options for you and your teammates.
3.) Whenever you or teammates lose hope in a game because you’re trailing by a lot of points all you need to say, “Let’s Get ONE STOP!…” or if you’re on offense down by 15 tell em’ “Fellas, All we need is Just ONE Basket! We don’t need to score 15 points all at once. Lets just get ONE.”
What this does, is it shifts their focus from thinking, “Damn, we have to score 10 points in order to get back in the game” to “Okay, if we get this one steal or score one basket it will pick up our momentum and cause us to make more and more steals…We could do this”.
This forces their minds and actions to focus on ONE Stop or ONE Basket rather than thinking they have to make 10 steals or 10 shots all at once…It’s amazing how well this works.
So I hope you see the value and importance of these three short exercises. Doing them for just 2 days will allow you to see an immediate result and soon after you’ll keep doing them over and over again because you’ll quickly realize how much it has improved your game. Trust me, I know.
Good luck and have fun dominating your competition!
