The Magic Solution For Fat Loss

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

Sorry. I shouldn’t have given this article such a title.

However, it was done to make a point.

How many of you got really excited because you thought yet again, that the ultimate fat loss solution had finally arrived?

The point of this article is not to try and find some magic solution but to explain why you can spend your life chasing your tail trying to find one single entity which will magically result in you having the body of your dreams in a matter of days.

I have a genuine dislike for people who make millions by selling products which have no end goal other than to make a profit. This applies to pills, magazines, physical goods or anything else which promises a lot but delivers nothing.

If the truth be told, this article could be a book in itself! The book would never be finished though because until people like you start searching for realistic, but highly effective ways to lose body fat through mental control and physical exertion, the market for such products will remain.

So here we have it, the most popular, and likely most ineffective magic fat loss solutions!

The power plate:

The theory behind the power plate is that the vibrations created by the machine cause stimulation to your muscles resulting in many rapid contractions. The story goes that this causes the muscles to become toned and also helps lose weight and increase strength.

The marketers claim all sorts of benefits from those mentioned above to increased flexibility and core strength to better coordination.

My response:

1) In terms of getting a toned stomach and tight legs it doesn’t matter how much you electrify a muscle into stimulating. If you don’t follow a solid nutrition plan you will not minimise your body fat thus not making your jelly belly look any better!

2) If this type of vibration is the solution to strength and fat loss, why isn’t every Tube / Subway rider perfectly toned. Surely an hour on that every morning and every evening would work wonders! What about the pneumatic drill operators who get vibrated for hours each day and yet are still fat!

3) The Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise Journal (2003), which is quoted as a source of scientific evidence on the Power Plate marketing page, concluded “Whole body vibration has the potential to induce strength gain in the knee extensors of previously untrained females to the same extent as resistance training at moderate intensity”

Moderate intensity doesn’t get results therefore matching this is no great success!

Also, pretty much anything that got the muscles working in some form would result in strength gains in ‘previously untrained’ females. It is highly unlikely that it will have any effect on anyone who is even slightly experienced with resistance exercise.

Finally on this point, the research compares dynamic exercises on the plate to machine based exercises with weights. Dynamic, functional movements always lead to greater strength gains (and fat loss) over typical gym-based which is why they form the basis of the Storm Force Fitness programs.

4) I will always, always promote fat loss as part of a total approach to fitness. Exercise hard and eat well and you will achieve massive gains in strength, muscle tone, flexibility, and fat loss. I cannot understand people who want to lose fat without wanting to feel a million times better and live a much more fulfilling life by improving all areas of their fitness at the same time.

5) You can only achieve a certain level of strength gain with bodyweight. Beyond this point, there must be an involvement of weights in one form or another whether it be barbells, kettlebells, dumbbells or ideally a combination.

6) Where’s the challenge in standing on a vibrating platform?!

It could be argued that these machines could enhance the effectiveness of your warm up in the gym. However, unless you play for a pro-sports team the chances are you won’t have one when you go to play football or tennis so learn to mobilise your joints and warm up your muscles in a functional manner you can apply in any situation.

Do yourself a favour and find out how to lose weight whilst dramatically improving your all-round fitness and athletic ability rather than trying to take the lazy route. You’ll be a much better person physically and mentally as a result.

Vibrating abs machines:

The theory behind the vibrating abs machines such as Slendertone is very similar to that of the power plate. Apparently the electrical pulses stimulate muscle contractions which will give you an awesome six-pack!

The reasons why this is rubbish are covered in the Power Plate discussion above.

However, there are other issues to consider.

  1. Even if it did work (which it doesn’t) it does nothing to build strength and stability in the core muscles
  2. It is claimed that the use of Slendertone is similar to doing hundreds of crunches everyday. This probably is true because doing hundreds of crunches will not give you a firm stomach. Such activity is pointless unless you are entering a crunching-endurance competition!
  3. The key to improved physical looks and performance is progressive overload where you continually add more weight, vary the reps performed, the rest time etc. This is impossible with a machine of this nature
  4. slendertone.com (10 June 2008) claims that the TVA (Transverse Abdominal Muscle) is very difficult to reach with conventional exercise. This is an outright lie as we achieve it in Storm Force Abs by utilising certain breathing and bracing techniques to give you rock-hard core muscles before progressing to the development of the ’six pack’.
  5. Getting a six pack is impossible without addressing nutrition and getting your body fat down to around 10% if you’re male and around 17% if you’re female.

Again, don’t believe that a truly attractive body can be achieved with anything but hard work and sound nutrition!

Ab rollers:

In case you don’t know what I’m talking about with ab rollers, they look like small cradles in which you lie with your head on the pad and hold on to the frame of the roller above your face. The idea is then to use the frame to help you perform ab crunches.

The idea is that it can help those unable to perform crunches without assistance. As with many fitness devices, all this serves to achieve is a solution to the problem (and a bad solution at that) rather than addressing the cause.

The cause is weak abdominal and core muscles meaning the individual is unable to generate the strength to pull themselves into the crunch position and control their torso on the way down.

This is exactly why yo must go through various stages of core and abdominal development so you can address your weak abdominal and core muscles rather than trying to cheat. In the short, medium and long-term the results in terms of increased strength, injury prevention and looks will be much better!

The use of the arms in this movement is akin to putting a motor on your bicycle and wondering why you’re not getting any fitter! I bet you don’t take a zimmer frame on the treadmill or wear armbands when you swim.

Why? Because you have taken the time (at some stage in your life) to learn how to do it properly.

Another key point on ab rollers is the limits on progress (not that any real success can be made anyway). As mentioned in the discussions on the magic, electro-machines, this exercise has sever limitations in that it can’t be progressed other than to do more and more reps. This will help increase the supported crunching endurance of your abs but do nothing to improve their appearance.

Finlly, the nature of the exercise encourages the body into that forward curving posture. As most people will have poor posture from sitting at a desk and driving all day, this will only serve to compound their problem and encourage back pain and other postural complications.

Nintendo Wii Fit:

As soon as I heard of this invention I knew the world was asking for trouble. I also knew that unfortunately it would sell very well.

For those who don’t know, the Wii Fit is essentially a series of computer games which supposedly helps your entire family to lose weight. It includes bodyweight exercises and stretching amongst other games and also monitors your Body Mass Index and gives targets for you to aim for.

The problems:

1) It’s another invention that treats the problem and not the underlying cause. In this case it’s the slippery slope Britain and the rest of modern society is hurtling down. The use of computers and other technology are largely responsible for the new found laziness and inactivity we see everywhere. Whatever happened to kids playing in the park for 3 or 4 hours every weekend?

2) The Wii draws people away from real-life exercise in the fresh air which provides untold benefits along with the activity itself.

3) The old bodyweight argument again. There is only so much you can achieve with bodyweight in terms of strength gains and improving your physical appearance.

4) Because it is a computer game, people assume they can play it all they want. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth as the risk of repetitive strain is great in the same way as playing any sport on a regular basis. This will mainly consist of wrist, elbow and shoulder strains from ‘throwing balls’ or ‘boxing’ with no specific tuition or strengthening of muscles such as the rotator cuff which helps stabilise and protect the shoulder during such movements. The danger is magnified by the fact that there is even less chance of players warming up properly.

5) The player can’t achieve anywhere near the required level of intensity for real fitness gains and fat loss when they are essentially standing on the spot.

6) Do you really want to run on the spot looking at a screen for 30 minutes? Not only is this very boring but you cannot achieve the right biomechanics and elevated calorie burn achieved through sprinting or even fast running intervals.

7) The marketers at Nintendo promote the fact that it helps address postural issues. However, there are no exercises to counterbalance the effects of, and muscles worked during, press ups. How is this balanced? It can lead only to further hunchback postures!

8) On a psychological point, how do you think a 10 year old girl will react when the computer tells her she is overweight because of her elevated BMI?

Get outside! Swing some kettlebells! Sprint in the park! Forget computers for true fitness and fat loss!

Gym machines:

It makes me laugh when people come into our personal training studio in Nottingham and seem confused about why we have virtually no machines.

Unfortunately it has become accepted that fitness venues must contain leg presses, leg extensions, pec decs etc.

These machines are useful for absolutely nothing unless you are looking to become a pro bodybuilder and you need to isolate individual muscles in order to produce perfect symmetry for when you’re prancing on stage in your bathing suit.

Here’s why fixed machines are vastly inferior to free weights for everything from strength gains to fat loss:

1) The purpose of these machines is to isolate muscles. The less muscles you use at one time, the less calories you burn during and after the session. If you are looking for muscle growth consider this. The chances are if you have reached this article you are not a bodybuilder but are looking for maximum fat loss and an attractive but functional body in minimal time. This can only be achieved using full body movements using free weights.

2) Nearly all of these machines involve sitting down. Your body is designed to move freely. It wants to run, jump, bend, lift, and twist. If you want your body to perform well in daily activities and sport you can’t train it sitting down!

3) If you want to increase your strength you need to learn to use your body as one, solid unit. This is known as having a strong, coordinated kinetic chain which works well as one. If you treat your muscles as individual entities, your body will remain only as strong as its weakest link.

4) The Smith Machine is a popular tool for those looking to bench press and squat more. However, it doesn’t allow your body to move in the arc of motion it would do naturally thus affecting your biomechanics and putting you at risk of injury.

5) Steppers and treadmills are also highly popular. Whilst the treadmill can be a great tool in winter, like the stepper it is often abused. Next time you’re in the gym, check how many people hold on to the support rails on the cardio machines. This prevents you from using your natural motion and rhythm and will severely limit progress. Also it often results in shocking posture for the duration of the session. I used to watch a guy put the incline right up on the treadmill then hold on to the front handrail and lean back. This effectively put him back at the angle he would have been at had he stayed flat! All he achieved was giving his arms a good workout having to hang on!

Hopefully this article will stop you from falling for any more expensive, yet largely useless ‘fitness tools’. There are many more marketing scams out there in addition to those mentioned so be alert!

Stick to free weights and your body’s natural movements and you will progress.

It’s Time For Either a Triple Crown Or Grand Slam of NASCAR

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

Thoroughbred Horse Racing has its celebrated Triple Crown (Kentucky Derby, Preakness, Belmont Stakes). Professional tennis cherishes its Grand Slam (Australian, French Open, Wimbledon, U.S. Open), four tournaments that only five men and women have won in a calendar year. So does PGA golf (Masters, U.S. Open, British Open, PGA Championship), four tournaments that no man has captured in a single season.

Sports where every participant gathers for each event have traditionally recognized a handful of prestigious races or tournaments that stand above the rest. NASCAR has added to its schedule through the years after chopping it to one race per week when the “Modern Era” began in 1972. But with 36 events covering 10 months in the Sprint Cup Series, what distinguishes one date from the rest?

Currently only the season-opening Daytona 500, the “Super Bowl of Stock Car Racing,” is recognized for special prominence, although certain racetracks have a measure of renown. “The Brickyard” at Indianapolis, due to its status as home of the open-wheeled Indianapolis 500, is one such venue. The “Track That’s Too Tough to Tame” at Darlington, along with the fame awarded at Talladega SuperSpeedway, bring added significance during the 10-month race season.

If NASCAR wanted its own version of the “Triple Crown,” the first pick is a no-brainer. The Daytona 500, a.k.a. “The Great American Race,” is the most watched and esteemed motorsports event on the continent. Beyond that, there are few races most fans can even identify by name. The Pocono 500 comes to mind because it’s about the only other event to keep its original name through the years, while other race names are in constant change due to corporate sponsorship. Still, the Pocono race only started in ‘82, missing out on the sport’s Golden Era, and takes place two weeks after the better known Coca-Cola 600.

The argument that a Talladega race should be included is valid, but the Aaron’s 499-no attention-grabber and with no real tradition-doesn’t fit. And the April date is too soon and October race too late.

The Coca-Cola 600, called the World 600 until ‘85, runs on Memorial Day weekend and competes head-to-head with the Indy 500. The all afternoon drive began to outdraw the Indy Racing League’s grand event in ‘02. Had NASCAR’s longest race kept its original name, which denoted the world’s longest regularly-run race of its kind, the World 600 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway (formerly Charlotte Motor Speedway), held near the unofficial start of summer, would easily be the second leg of a Triple Crown.

The perfect date for the final leg would be the Labor Day weekend race, particularly if that were still the date of the Southern 500. But NASCAR killed that event-after renaming it the Mountain Dew Southern 500-in 2005. With the 10-race Chase starting two weeks later, a late August/early September date would be ideal.

Were a “Grand Slam” more preferable to a Triple Crown, the July 4th weekend race, once called the Firecracker 400 and since changed to Coke Zero 400 Powered by Coca-Cola, would work, but that would give Coco-Cola two major plugs-although Coke is the “official soft drink of NASCAR”-and also give Daytona two dates in the Crown/Slam. And Daytona officials would balk at losing that date to Talladega. A road course has been suggested as a final leg to give drivers a true test at versatility, but road course events haven’t caught on fast with NASCAR’s fan base. Chase races are not worthy of consideration given the emphasis on gathering points above winning any one event.

The Daytona 500, World 600, Firecracker 400 and Southern 500 are the events that spark the most memories and stir the biggest debates, but a Grand Slam is not doable just yet. With a tweak here and there, the best bet for a NASCAR Crown or Slam is three or all of the following: the Daytona 500, won in ‘08 by Ryan Newman; the Coca-Cola 600, won by Kasey Kahne; a re-named Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis, won by Jimmie Johnson in a race marred by bad tires; and the final event before the Chase, which would return winning to the forefront over positioning for the “playoffs.” Currently that’s the Chevy Rock & Roll 400 at Richmond-another prestigious track. Give the race a better name or switch dates with a re-named Talladega event, and decide if a Slam is preferable to a Crown. Otherwise, the first three options have merit for a true Triple Crown.

That would mean horsepower over horses. Our four-hoofed friends haven’t won a Triple Crown of their own since 1978.

Hockey Music – The Zamboni’s

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

Clearly a cult band developed from a cult sport is a case of two wrongs making a right because The Zamboni’s, a band that performs songs primarily about – you guessed it – hockey, has been enjoying success for a long, long time now.

The band has found its niche as an enjoyable rock/punk/humorous sort of gig. They produce great sounding, catchy tunes that just so happen to be about hockey. In fact, they’re probably one of the few bands to ever be reviewed in both Billboard Magazine as well as ESPN Magazine:

“On paper, it sounds like a novelty: an album of songs that celebrate hockey. But in the hands of The Zambonis (a pop-rock quartet named after the ice-grooming machine), the concept is elevated to an art form that won’t melt under the heat of critics or music fans. Despite the specificity of the album’s theme, The Zambonis rock out like the best power pop units. What’s more, they have a sense of humor about themselves…A timely and surprisingly appealing release.” -Billboard

“Their new record is as goofy, poppy and puck-obsessed as their previous two…Hockey heads and indie rock fans, you’ll love these guys!” -ESPN Magazine

The band is made up of Dave Schneider (guitarist, singer), Jon Aley (guitar, bass), Steve Tanski (guitar, bass), Mat Orefice (drums) Tarquin Katis (hardcore vocalist), Peter Katis (Producer) and Matt Gonzales (Hockey Monkey). They’ve toured all across the world and are a truly hard working band that you just can’t help not loving – especially when they’re such big hockey fans. You’ve probably heard some of their songs before, whether it be on a hockey video game, during any hockey airings on the Versus Network, or, for that matter, during a re-airing of Nickelodeon’s Kablam! program.

I could drag on about how awesome these guys are but really I’d just be boring you with some pretty impressive details. So check out their Web site, or their Facebook page, or their MySpace page for that matter and enjoy.

Hockey Exercise – Soft Touch Stick Handling

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

Soft touch stick handling is a great hockey exercise because it’s easy to do at home. All you need is your hockey stick and a ball – preferably a street hockey ball, but if you’re in a bind, a baseball or tennis ball will do.

This exercise will help your stickhandling greatly. If you’re just starting out, begin by taking a stance that has your feet positioned shoulder length apart. Now, while wearing your normal hockey gloves and using your normal hockey stick (to help build comfort with your own equipment), begin stickhandling the ball back and forth between your two feet; that means that the ball should never travel further than either foot in going back and forth. Do this 100 times and repeat over the coming days and weeks until comfortable.

One you’ve built up enough familiarity with this drill, tighten up your stance a bit so that your feet are a bit closer together and adjust your stickhandling so that you are moving the ball back and forth within a shorter distance and at a faster pace. Do this 200 times over the coming days and weeks until comfortable.

Doing this drill will not only increase the speed with which you are able to stickhandle, it will also help build up your level of comfort in stickhandling with your equipment and hockey stick.

As you become more and more comfortable, you can begin setting up barriers in between your stickhandling range that you must work around (e.g., plastic solo cups placed in a triangle formation that you must stickhandle “around”). This will all be covered in future hockey exercise postings.

Good luck and enjoy!

How to Avoid Scams and Make Money Online

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

Ok lets face it, we all would love to “Get Rich Quick” right. Or even more believable, “Work from Home”, am I correct. Well there are a lot of scams out there that promise these very things, but please DO NOT fall for them. I’m going to explain to you how to avoid getting scammed by those oh so good sounding scams on the internet, job boards, or even in the newspapers.

Most of the people that are lured into these heinous schemes either hate their jobs, tired of being away from home so much, or are just looking for another source of income. So if you are reading this then I take it you are wanting a way to make money, but don’t want to be scammed because you have heard the terror stories. Well I’ll be the first to say all those stories are true, and trust me, you don’t want to be a victim of a scam if you haven’t already, because it’s not a great experience at all.

First of all, I’m speaking from experience as a person who hated his job and just didn’t believe that this was life. You know, having to go to the same place everyday 9 hrs a day 5 days a week, trading your time for money, I was just one of those people that wouldn’t settle for that. I had heard all these stories about people making money online and from ebay and stuff and I wanted my piece of the pie. Especially considering how computer savvy I was, I thought I could never get scammed. Man was I wrong. I had fallen for so many scams and wasted so much money, I found myself back at the employment office looking for that same ole’ 9-5. I wouldn’t wish that on anyone so I’ve put together some ways to watch out for scams and to make your OWN money online based on my experiences and observations.

Most importantly you should understand that a scam is nothing more than a scheme that someone thought up that would make THEM money. They just went about it in an unethical way, as in persuading the victim to give them money before they knew that what they were paying for isn’t what they expected at all.

If you don’t take anything from this article, please remember these 4 things…

*There is no such thing as “Get Rich Quick”

*There is no such thing as “Easy Money” (legally)

*If you aren’t told exactly what you are going to be doing to make money before they are asking for your money, then it is a scam (most important)

*If it sounds too good to be true, then guess what, it probably is

The truth is, to make money online takes time and commitment, and there are ultimately only 3 ways to make money online…

*Selling something (whether it be on ebay or your own site)

*Advertising

*Affiliate Programs

These are ultimately the only legitimate ways to make money online. Yes there are some companies that do actually outsource work and have employees that work from home, but believe it or not, they don’t make much money ($8 – $10 per hr). If you are trying to get rich online, then good luck, but if you are trying to develop a side hustle, or eventually have something take over your main source of income, then the 3 ways I just mentioned are great things to do. Yes it is possible to make a lot of money online selling, advertising, and taking part in affiliate programs, but it takes a lot of hard work and dedication (not necessarily money) to get it off the ground to where you are making any money at all. Most people don’t stick it out and that’s why the majority of people who do this fail, because they just give up, but remember it takes TIME and PATIENCE.

For those scams, I mean sites, that promise you will make a fortune in a week, please don’t waste your money, or time reading about it, because trust me, it is a scam. I mean think about it, if you really could make thousands of dollars in a couple of weeks, don’t you think everyone would be doing it? This is coming from someone who has tried those schemes and know what they are all about…nothing but making money off of the people that fall for it. So please don’t become a victim, be an entrepreneur. Most people say that it takes money to make money, not necessarily. If you are planning on doing the Selling method of making money online, then yes it probably will take some startup cost to buy your product. But if you are pursuing a career online utilizing another method, then it shouldn’t take much money, if any, at all.

One way to make money online by incorporating advertising and affiliates is to develop a blog. It costs almost nothing to start up a site ($4-$10 a month for hosting, and around $10 a yr for a domain name), think of an idea you know a lot about (free), and throw some advertisements (adsense, widegetbucks, etc.) and affiliates (Amazon, etc.) in the page (free) along with great articles written by you (free). This is not the only way to make money online, but it is one of the fastest growing ways to make money for those who don’t really have anything to sell. You can still be an entrepreneur by providing great information and knowledge and having sponsors (advertisers, and affiliates) pay for it.

Scammers prey on those people that don’t know how to watch out for them. Those people who hate their jobs, need more money, or just see something that sounds too good to be true. They love these people, so know that they are going to say whatever they have to say to get you to come aboard. You can be reading an article from one of these scammers and they can have you so into it, revealing relevant information such as how they didn’t have any money before this program came about, or how they don’t have to do anything because their proven system is totally automated to make them money. They tell stories about how they go on vacation every week, and can spend all their time with their kids, and their lives are just so blissful. It’s all BULL just too get you to pay them for great observation on how you or anyone would love to live. These people are salespeople, and great ones at that. But the product they are selling is a lie just to get your money, and possibly your identity. The next time you read one of these scammer’s articles, I bet you want see anywhere in the article that tells you exactly how you will go about making this fortune. They will tell you nothing more than their fantasy lifestyle, and that you won’t have to do anything but sit back and watch your bank account grow. They tell you this because that’s what you want to hear, am I wrong. That’s the American Dream, other than to be famous, to be rich without having to lift a finger.

In conclusion, just remember, to make money online is possible, but not as easy as those scams make you think it is. It takes hard work and time, because there is no such thing as legal fast money, except for winning the lottery that is. Also remember, that if an opportunity doesn’t tell you EXACTLY how you are going to be making money before you pay them, then it is a scam.

An Important Mindset “Secret” That Leads to Making Money Online

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

If we get your head in the right place, it is easy to succeed making money online no matter what.

Sometimes, in order to save ourselves from short-term losses, we forgo real and actual gains and find ourselves running in circles. Here’s the simple “secret” that will lead you in the right direction.

THERE IS NO FREE LUNCH

I know it sounds simple, but those who have tried so hard to make money online usually fail because they just refuse to acknowledge this and thus become what we know as the PENNY WISE POUND FOOLISH lot.

We basically earn anything using our energy, time or money…that includes our respect, integrity and popularity.

If you’re always on the lookout for free ways, as in no or low cost ways to make money online, you need to realize your trading away of your time and energy… Spending less money initially usually doesn’t work out well for most people including those who have been trying for years to break the internet marketing code.

Buying eBooks to Read and Learn & Buying eBooks to Read, Learn and Apply…

Do they sound the same to you?

Clarify your purpose and you’ll waste less money, time and energy altogether!

Get this right and you’ll realize it’s all about what you choose to trade with to make money online.

Choosing to buy an eBook that will help you focus better, organize better and eventually grow your business is a good thing…but not taking action after reading it is simply self-defeating.

There’s no free lunch and you need to take action to earn that sumptuous meal.

Yes, planning, organizing, testing, evaluating, taking action…basically spending time, energy and money… leads to earning you your Lunch.

The person who does not work simply does not get to eat.

Even putting the food to your mouth is work =)

Whatever your choices may be, in order for you to work less physically, you need to work hard mentally… also known as to work smart.

It’s really that simple. We ourselves tend to and like to complicate matters =)

Now, successful people I know are all basically very reflective people, but with a twist. They dare to take action, and will try until they succeed.

It like playing basketball… You may have the skills and strategies, but you’ll also have your opponents trying to block your attempts. There will be moments when you need to make a few extra attempts in order to overcome your adversities. You need to keep at it and keep your focus in order to make the baskets. And life is like that.

Every ball you basket counts.

My personal secret formula: 1 2 3 Stop Think Do.

I’ve learned that in school when I was a teenager. More on that soon…

Here’s wishing you success in making money online!

Ways to Make Money in Your Investment Business

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

Did you realize that investment is all around you? If you have been thinking about investing but have failed to raise enough seed capital to get into Real Estate or the Stock Market, you may be delaying for no reason at all. This article explores some ways to make money in your investment business today…right now.

Let’s make it clear, the definition of an investment is that you spend money on something and get it back after a period of time plus a return. That is what defines the investment. Nothing more. So when thinking of shares or houses, we are kind of blinded by the legitimacy of these investment vehicles and fail to see that anything can be an investment.

Speed of returns is an incredibly important concept. Most investors measure their compounding progress over the annual time frame. If you focus your investment activities on short cycle investments like a month or a week, you can do much better annually.

Risk is another very important consideration, if you hand over your money and receive nothing in return of equal or better intrinsic value, you have no control and therefore you have risk. For example in the stock market when you hand over shares, you get paper receipts. These are not worth money in themselves and you are at the mercy of an unpredictable fluctuating share price. The point is you have no control and therefore have an overlay of risk.

Compare that to for example buying a second hand vehicle that you know is mis-priced and worth 40% more than you paid for it. In this case, you spent your money, but you received something tangible in return and it is under your control and therefore has less risk. Add to that the strong possibility of turning it over in a week or two and you have quite a strong investment.

Desperation & Defeat!

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

Desperate sports teams are easy to spot. And they often pay the price of desperation with a big loss, or several losses. They are easy to spot. You might say the Buffalo Bills were desperate (or delusional) a year ago when they anointed J.P. Losman as the starting quarterback after running veteran Drew Bledsoe out of town. Losman was completely untested as a pro quarterback when the Bills announced he was No. 1 and they had total confidence in him.

They were the only ones who had confidence, as Losman quickly lost his when Buffalo started 1-3 straight up and against the spread. The passing offense had 164, 100, 36 and 64 yards in those four games! Desperate organizations, coaches or managers make up reasons as to why they think what they’re doing is a good thing, even if it flies in the face of reason. It’s up to the sports handicapper to examine the reasons more so than listening to the explanations.

One act of desperation that jumped out at me this baseball season was when the Mets starting pitching got decimated with injuries in May. One guy they brought up to fill the bill was 33-year old Jose Lima, who had been an awful starter the previous four years. I wondered why on earth the Mets would even give him a shot? Lima was pounded in a 13-6 loss in his first start, giving up 4 runs in 4 2/3 innings. His next start: 5 runs allowed in 4 2/3 innings. This was followed by a start where he allowed 5 runs in 5 innings in a 13-3 loss to Atlanta. Three losses in three starts, allowing 9.3 runs in three games!

Because those positions, quarterback and starting pitcher, are so important, it’s very easy to identify desperation spots by teams. It’s less obvious, and less important, with other players on a team. One reason is that football teams generally have enough depth at wideout, offensive line, or even running back, is that a backup can come in and perform fairly well. Those players don’t touch the ball every play, either, like a quarterback.

In baseball, an outfielder who can hit may replace a star player, but he will only bat 4 times in a game and have a handful of defensive plays. A team can get by and not be at a huge disadvantage for a few games. A starting pitcher, however, touches the baseball every pitch. And when the talent drops from a quality starter to a Triple-A kid, or a has-been guy like Lima, the dropoff can be large and felt right away.

The Tigers lost starter Mike Maroth early this season and were forced to start Zack Miner. In his first start, he could only go 4 innings (a loss), and the Detroit bullpen was forced to use 5 relievers. It was Miner’s major league debut. You can see how a desperation start like that can not only hurt a team one game (a loss), but by taxing the bullpen it can hurt a team the next few games. That loss started a 3-game skid for the Tigers. Desperation and defeat often go hand and hand.

Relocating to Tampa Bay – You’re Going to Love It Here

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

It’s no wonder that Florida’s Tampa Bay area has become such a popular choice for relocating adults and families to call home. The west coast of Florida has mile after mile of white, sandy beaches and magnificently, beautiful natural resources. These areas include the city of Tampa, Clearwater, St. Petersburg, as well as Palm Harbor, Tarpon Springs and Oldsmar.

Picture if you will, the opportunity for renewing your spirit any time you need a recharge. Dip your toes into the gentle, warm gulf waters of Tampa Bay. Let your troubles roll out to sea with the tides. As the waves return to once again touch the shores, let them bring you peace and a renewed sense of self. Now that you feel newly invigorated, perhaps you will want to head over to one of the areas more populated beaches, such as Clearwater Beach or St. Petersburg Beach, for some adventure. Take the whole family for a day of fun-filled activities such as collecting sea shells, building sand castles, swimming, fishing, parasailing, or take a cruise for the chance for spotting a whale or a group of dolphins.

You will find exciting activities away from the beaches as well. You can spend the day shopping to find that unique gift for yourself or a loved one. Take in an art gallery or take the family on a historic tour of the area or even to one of the many museums you will find throughout Florida’s Tampa Bay area. When you get hungry, you will find plenty of fine dining and family restaurants to satisfy even the most finicky of eaters.

The Tampa Bay area is also home to some of the best theatre productions, live music, and sporting events to be found anywhere. Attend a play or watch in awe, the beauty of ballet, for a cultural experience your family will not soon forget. The sports fan will be delighted as a spectator at one of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers action-filled football games. Those who like to gamble a bit might enjoy a little time spent betting, at one of the areas Greyhound Racing tracks.

You will find that life along Florida’s West Coast offers on one hand, an oasis from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, and even the influx of tourists that visit Florida each year: but also provides you with many recreational and educational activities to enhance the time that you spend with your family. And of course, you are just a short distance drive from family attractions such as Disney World, Busch Gardens, Universal Studios, Cypress Gardens, and Universal Studios. But unlike visitors who only get to experience some of what Florida’s West Coast has to offer, as a resident, you can discover and explore all that is here, at your own pace.

You can rely on your Tampa real estate representative to provide you with all of the information and assistance that you will need as you become an official “Floridian.” A real estate agent can help you select the neighborhood that best matches your living style and needs. Whether you’re looking for a suitable neighborhood to raise a family in, or a community for adults 55 and over, or looking to settle in where other single, middle-aged people are already living: your real estate agent can help you locate these areas.

Together you and your agent can explore the many housing options available to you. From single-family dwellings to single adult condominium complexes and retirement villas, so that you can choose the one that is best for you. These friendly and knowledgeable real estate representatives can also assist you in obtaining the financing you need to make your dream of relocating to Florida’s West Coast, a reality!

Things To Do While Visiting Dublin

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

With a population of almost half a million, Dublin is the capital and largest city on the island of Ireland. It was originated in 488AD as a shipping port while going through the Irish Sea and has progressively grown into a modern day city throughout the years.

Today Dublin is a mixture of the old and the new Metro and they merge nicely from the downtown area out into the suburbs.

Dublin has a sizable number of immigrants, coming from Great Britain, the US, Australia, New Zealand, and continental Europe. More recently, Nigerian, Indian, and Eastern European populations have also migrated into the city, largely attracted by Ireland’s economic success since the mid-1990’s. Old and once run-down streets have rapidly become busy ‘ethnic districts’, such as Moore Street’s transformation into ‘Little Africa’ and Parnell Street East into the city’s de-facto ‘Chinatown’ and ‘Asian Village’. These villages are a great way for tourists to spend the afternoon, casually walking the cobblestone streets, shopping and having lunch!

There is plenty to do in Dublin if you are on vacation or sightseeing.

- The National Print Museum of Ireland

- The Irish Museum of Modern Art

- The National Gallery of Ireland

- The Hugh Lane Municipal Gallery

- The Chester Beatty Library

- And three centers of the National Museum of Ireland are all located in Dublin.

These cultural museums would make an informative and beautiful tour around the city of Dublin. And Dublin has an excellent bus system that will carry you around the town with very little effort or expense. Or if you prefer a more energetic afternoon, renting a bicycle and touring on a bike is a popular way to see the city ‘up close and personal’.

The river Liffey separates Dublin, the North from the South, with typically the working class on the North and the middle and upper class on the South. In more recent years the city has also been divided socio-economically between East and Westside too. But not to worry! There are plenty of restaurants and nightlife anywhere you want to go, from the friendly outdoor pubs to the Temple Bar, which is “The Place” for nightlife and often people from Britain and beyond visit for the weekend.

Whatever you prefer, you are sure to find in Dublin. And don’t forget to catch a football or a rugby game at Croke Park, which seats 82,300 fans! There are other sports arenas scattered around the city for soccer, horse and greyhound racing, baseball, and other athletic events which are held at Morton Stadium in Santry.

So, from fine dining to eating in your hotel and the wonderful restaurants, to cultural exhibits around town, and seasonal sports events across the country to ending a wonderful day with a night of dancing or walking along the beach, there is sure to be something for everyone to enjoy while in Dublin.

And don’t forget the week-long celebrations for St Patrick’s Day, which culminate in the great parade on 17 March.

How To Legally Back Winning Horses and Dogs After The Result is Known

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

—————————————–

Brooke of Enfield

All bets accepted subject to our rules.

—————————————–

Stakes: Selection: Time:

—————————————–

Silver Lily AS 1400

Golden Lily AS 1700

£1 WIN both selections D-S-A

____________________________

———–

Stake:

£2 : p

———–

The above perfectly legal wager is the one that ALL bookmakers dislike laying. It’s a very punter friendly wager and always only grudgingly accepted, because fortunately for us, bookmaking in The UK is very competitive.

After GOLDEN LILY was a winning horse, the bookie is allowing an additional £2 of winnings to revert onto SILVER LlLY, which has already won almost three hours previously. Stumble upon two winners and the bookie is generously granting a £6 wager for a £2 stake. My advice is to change betting shops after a pair of nice priced winners – and ditto after the next pair! DOUBLE-STAKES-ABOUT (D-S-A) wagers, will alas only cover two selections but can be used on all anti-post bets, often with months between actual races – hows that then?

With all multiple bets (Yankees, Heinzs, Canadians etc) winnings travel
“only” forward. You may believe that when you eventually stumble upon four winning Favs in a Yankee, that winnings from the third and fourth selection have reverted onto selections one end two – but this is “not” so.

Many shrewd punters sit in a betting shop and do race-by-race win Yankees or Place Only (TOTE) Yankees. This enables them to take a board price about selections 2, 3, and 4 in a win Yankee etc. Race-by-race win and Place-Only multiple wagers, would be impossible to do, if winnings or stakes were to reverse.

No UK book maker will accept a place-only Multiple wager, yet most will
accept 8 “place only” Single, at Tote odds. Why not sit in a betting shop and do a “place only”, Three Doubles and a Treble? Simp1y place three points on the first selection and reserve one-point for selection two end write “place only” on both wagers. If selection-one is placed, place the total return (plus the set-aside one-point), onto selection-two; DEDUCT1NG one-third of one’s return, for I and 3 place double. If selection two is placed, remove the place-double (I and 2) and place everything onto selection-three. If selection-three is placed, the return will yield two one-point place doubles and a one-point treble. When selection-two is unplaced, remember to put on the 1 and 3 place-double.

There is no way whatsoever you can sit in a betting shop and do a
race-by-race D-S-A wager. You can sit there for ever, without improving it.

One of the main reasons that horse racing bookies rarely go bust (or ride push bikes!), is the sad fact that most punters do not know how to lay their money out in the most effective way. Almost all wagers can be re-written more punter-friendly, with no additional outlay. My page one example wager cannot be improved upon, and if adhered to religiously, your local bookie will soon be requesting you to take your business elsewhere!

D-S-A wagers can’t be successfully “hedged”. The Big Three uk book makers will not accept a D-S-A from a fellow bookie. All three will accept them from shop or credit punters, but only for nominal stakes.

Once they have taken the example wager on page-one, all any manager can do, hedging-wise, is this:

£1 win double S.L. and G.L. – if lose S.L. then £1 w G.L. £2 staked. This is fine if both win and it’s OK if S.L. loses and G.L. wins, BUT, if S.L. wins at say 14/1 and G.L. loses, then the shop have lost almost £12 attempting to win £2. Add a few noughts and you can easily see how they can fall into the brown ‘n smelly!

If the D-S-A doesn’t improve your punting-winnings, then your method of
selection requires abandoning and not the wager.

Most horse winners are in the 3/1 to 14/I price-band and I suggest you
restrict your selections to this price-range. Some horses at 10/1 have
wonderful chances of winning, but a greyhound at this price has little
chance of winning and should be avoided. Don’t consider dogs priced over
6/1 or horses over 6/1 in small fields (3-6 runners). Finally, always
remember it is “only” D-S-A users, that can manipulate 2 points onto the
winner of the first-race, five minutes after the winner of the final-race of the day has weighed-in.

Please give the D-S-A wager a long and fair trial. It’s the sole reason
I’ve made the horses pay for the past five decades.

My most successful, profitable approach is to select five horses (never dogs) and to do any pair (10). Thus: “any pair (10), 1pt win both selections. D-S-A. A line is drawn under the instructions and 20pts are entered into the “stake box” (choose your own stakes).

In the event of three 4/1 winners (from five), not impossible, the pre-tax return is 96pts. This is almost 4/1 to your outlay (96/100ths of 4/1) for being only 3/5ths correct. This is far easier than “banking” on one of the five and sploshing on 20pts – and praying!

The 96pts are arrived at thus:

6 x 1pt singles at 4/1 = 30pts.

6 x 2pt singles at 4/1 (less 2pts each single) = 48pts.

6 x 1pt singles (all three winners x both losers).

less 2pts each single = 18pts.

A 7/1 winner and four losers yields a pre-tax 24pts (8pts, less 2pts, x 4).

Four or five decent priced winning horses and you’ll require a barrow – and a change of shops! This is a perfectly legal wager and most betting shops now use automatic calculating machines. Whereby the S.P. stake and wager are fed in to the machine and at the press of a button, the machine settles the wager – tax paid or unpaid.

Experience Counts!

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

We are smack in the middle of the early part of the college and pro football schedule. A key handicapping factor this time of year is experience on the field. College football teams that are returning a lot of starters on one side of the ball can have a significant advantage over and opponent.

A good example was Akron last week, my alma mater. The Zips are off a confidence-building bowl season and are fortunate to return eight starters on offense, including dynamic quarterback Luke Getsy and their top-six offensive lineman. Having continuity and familiarity on offense is so important.

It’s particularly important in college with players only performing a few years before graduating. Akron’s veteran offense led the way in a stunning 20-17 upset win at NC State last week. Notice that the Zips had the edge in offensive yards 412-290! That’s a significant advantage. When trying to find underdogs that might be able to hang in and get a cover or an upset, teams with a lot of returning starters can help provide that edge.

I was fortunate to advance in the LeRoy’s Invitational last week. The clincher came Monday night when the Chargers visited the Raiders. Even though they were a road favorite, I had the Chargers and experience was a factor I examined. San Diego had a solid returning defensive front and shored up the secondary in the offseason. On offense, while QB Philip Rivers was relatively new, every one of their key skill position players, including a deep offensive line, was back. San Diego happens to have great skill position talents for ball control, which coach Marty Schottenheimer preaches.

Oakland, on the other hand, was a revolving door of change this offseason. QB Kerry Collins, gone. CB Charles Woodson, gone. WR Doug Gabriel, see ya later, while a brand new coaching staff came in. It was no surprise to see the more talented AND experienced team win and cover easily. In fact, that Oakland Raider offense was downright embarrassing in its ineptitude. Good luck to them against the Ravens this weekend!

It’s easier to keep talent together in the pros, of course, which is why returning experience is more of a useful handicapping tool in college football. Think back one year ago. Cal was coming off a terrific 2004 10-2 season. However, almost everyone was gone, including the quarterback, the top receivers, top running back and several starters on the offensive line. In 2005, Cal was overvalued by oddsmakers and finished 3-7-1 against the spread.

On Friday of this week I got the cover with Toledo over Kansas partly because of a lack of returning experience for the Jayhawks. In my analysis I wrote, “The Jayhawks return just 10 starters this season, just 3 on the defensive side of the ball. After facing Northwestern State and Louisiana Monroe at home I don’t feel they will be ready for a game in the Glass Bowl. Kansas has a redshirt freshman at quarterback and this will be his first road start. Defensively they allowed nearly 400 passing yards last week to a poor Sun Belt Conference team.” So experience can work two ways in handicapping: Teams that have plenty of it on one side of the ball (or both), and those that lack it in some key area.

The Big Ten Report – Opening Weekend

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

The 2006 football season kicked off with a bang last weekend and all 11 Big Ten teams came to play. The conference notched 11 wins for the week – and only one game was competitive. This is a fantastic start for the Big Ten in a season where they should have no problem finding teams for their seven allotted bowl bids.

That being said, the majority of the 11 wins came against the mid-major Mid-American Conference and each of the Big Ten teams were favored. In essence, they were supposed to win 11 games last weekend. But the competition is about to become a bit stiffer in week two and certain teams vying for the BCS Championship Game in Glendale will need to find an extra gear to keep those title hopes alive.

Here is a recap of some of the highlights from last weekend, as well as a look ahead for what’s in store for the Big Ten Conference:

- Wisconsin Coach Bret Bielema had a successful debut as his team took down Bowling Green by a score of 35-14 in Cleveland. He has some big shoes to fill following the legendary Barry Alvarez, but he proved up to the task in week one. This was the second game of a home-and-home series over the last two seasons between the two schools. But Wisconsin did receive a bit of a break when the game was moved to Cleveland, two hours away from the campus of Bowling Green. For those of you that watched the game on ESPN GamePlan, you could see that the stands were only about one-third full, depriving the Falcons of any home-field advantage.

Bowling Green started off hot with a 10-play drive that led to a touchdown after QB Freddie Barnes ran a draw play up the middle from 21 yards out. That had to put a scare into the Badgers, but they responded immediately when their own 10-play drive was capped by a 7-yard run by Dywon Rowan. The Badgers didn’t look back and would win the game comfortably by a score of 35-14. As for the Falcons, they may want to reconsider their spread punt formation as this led to problems all night, including a blocked punt that Jonathon Casillas picked up for a touchdown. They need to just punt the ball like a normal team and not worry about trying to be creative.

Next up for Wisconsin is a home date with Western Illinois. There is no line on this game due to the fact that the Fighting Leathernecks are a 1-AA team from the Gateway Conference. The Badgers host San Diego State the following week, and should be 3-0 when they head into Ann Arbor on Sept. 23.

- For years Northern Illinois has hung tough with the big boys from the Midwest. With Texas on the horizon, we saw this as a perfect situation to go against Ohio State with a 5-unit selection. Since the Huskies did not have the edge in talent, it was important that they got off to a good start at the Horseshoe. Obviously they didn’t. The Buckeyes jumped out to a 21-0 lead after one quarter of play. QB Troy Smith tossed touchdown passes of 5 and 58 yards to Ted Ginn Jr. on the first two possessions as the Buckeyes geared up for next week’s showdown at Texas with a 35-12 victory.

We almost had a chance for a backdoor cover when Coach Jim Tressel switched quarterbacks inside the 10-yard line and the Huskies recovered a Justin Zwick fumble on the next play. Hopefully the coach has learned from this, and last year’s game with Texas, that Zwick has trouble holding onto the football and should not play at all this season. The Huskies do have a star in the making with RB Garrett Wolfe, who rushed for 171 yards a caught a touchdown pass. This is a good football team that will win a lot of games in 2006. You can expect to see them as a selection again in the near future. On a personal note, it is interesting to see the defensive backs for NUI are Adreil and Alvah Hansbro. These brothers went to high school in Madison, Wisconsin, and I played high school basketball against both them.

Next up for the Buckeyes is a trip to Austin to take on the Horns and complete this home-and-home series. This was a great game last year and I would expect a similar result in 2006. The early line has the Horns favored by 2.5. I would say that this is a game that we will stay away from in making a selection. We do feel that this is a situation where one team has a clear advantage, but we don’t feel confident enough that we consider it a strong advantage play. Let’s just say there may be a new No. 1 next week.

- Finally, it was an emotional night in Oxford, Ohio, as former Miami, OH and Northwestern coach Randy Walker was honored before kickoff. As we all know, Walker passed away tragically, leaving former standout Pat Fitzgerald as the new coach of the Wildcats. We used Northwestern as a selection and they did not disappoint, allowing just three points in the game. However, the offense was not in sync and thus achieved only 299 total yards. In fact, Northwestern’s offense didn’t put points on the board until a blocked punt early in the third quarter. Quarterback Mike Kafka got some rhythm after this play and just did enough to put this game out of reach.

The most surprising thing in this game was the defensive display by the Wildcats. The credit must be given to Fitzgerald (a defensive guy) for this turnaround. Under Walker, this team could score at-will but had trouble stopping teams. It will be interesting to see if this new mindset will bring about change in the win/loss column.

Next up for the Wildcats is a game against New Hampshire. I did not know the NH Wildcats played football, but a closer look into the program shows that they finished 11-2 in I-AA and may give the Chicago boys a game. There is no line on this game, either, but remember what Montana State did to Colorado a week ago.

- The other big game next week features Jo Pa and Penn State heading to South Bend to take on Notre Dame. The Lions lost most of their offensive firepower from a year ago and it will be interesting to see if they will be able to move the football against this improved Irish defense. The early line has the Irish favored by more than a touchdown and I expect Coach Weiss to make a statement in this game.

Three Thoughts From Around College Football

1) We need to stop putting the FSU/Miami game on in primetime by itself. The last two seasons, they have set college football back 30 years and neither one of them will contend for a National Title this year. Where have Charlie Ward, Ken Dorsey and all the offense gone?

2) After years of scheduling games against schools you can’t even pronounce, Minnesota is actually playing a tough non-conference schedule this season. The Gophers opened with a victory at Kent State and now head to Berkeley to take on an angry Bears team that was embarrassed at Tennessee last Saturday. You will hear from us on this game next weekend.

3) Congrats to the college football panel that came up with the idea to shorten the game by starting the clock on change of possessions. Many games took about three hours on Saturday and stations could actually keep their games on schedule. This is a rule that needs to stay in place.

Remember our early bird package is still in place and would encourage you to sign-up and let 35 years of experience work for you. Free Pick – Take Arkansas State +14 ½ over Oklahoma State – 18-6-2 record the last 2 years.

2006 Purdue Boilermakers Season Preview

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

Purdue is looking for a quick turnaround after their worst Big 10 season in recent memory. In fact, they missed out on bowl action last year for the first time since 1996. Coach Joe Tiller has signed 11 junior college players to help get some experience in a hurry. Purdue should make some big strides in 2006.

The Boilermakers won just 3 Big 10 games last season, but you should expect a 2-3 game improvement. Coach Joe Tiller and his staff are excited about QB Curtis Painter who took over the starting job last season against Wisconsin in Purdue’s 7th game as Tiller wasn’t happy with Kirsch’s play. Not only does Painter possess one of the strongest arms in the Big 10, he is very poised like former Purdue great Kyle Orton, and can also run the triple option.

With a pair of 6′4” receivers in Selwyn Lymon and Greg Orton along with last season’s leading Big 10 receiver with 80 catches Dorien Bryant, the Boilermakers’ spread offense should be a tough puzzle to get to the bottom of for opposing defenses. Lymon and Orton will have mismatches on the outside against every corner in the league and there might not be a better slot receiver in the country that Bryant.

All the expected offensive production may be all for not if Purdue’s defense can’t do a better job at getting stops. Last season, a defense which returned 10 defensive starters gave up 500 or more yards in 6 different games. Their secondary is their biggest weak spot and last season they couldn’t find a cure for the injury bug. Torri Williams has been talked of in the same breath as former Purdue standout Rod Woodson, but he can’t stay on the field. He missed last season because of a broken leg and he missed much of this season’s spring practices with a back injury. But even if he is healthy, teams will still take advantage of corner back Zach Logan who just doesn’t have enough size to get the job done every play. The Boilermakers will try to get help from junior college transfer Brandon Blackmon who will likely roam around at the free safety position.

Where the offensive line may be the most solid it’s ever been under Tiller, the defensive line is lacking. They have just 4 career starts between them. They will desperately need help from junior college transfer Mike McDonald and red shirt frosh Keyon Brown. Hopefully these guys can give Purdue the speed they need coming off the end to put pressure on opposing QB’s. Teams will likely run all over Purdue with their lack of size up front. The defensive obviously has some question marks, but Purdue will get back to a bowl in 2006. I like the Boilermakers to finish 5th in the Big 10 behind Wisconsin, Iowa, Michigan, and Ohio State mostly because their schedule affords them the luxury of not having to play Michigan or Ohio State.
